Over the past 20 years, the Pflugerville Community Development Corporation(PCDC) has collaborated with the Pflugerville Parks and Recreation Department to provide the community with upgrades, equipment, and recreational opportunities. While all these contributions have been important, the PCDC  took a monumental step in May 2023 and approved its largest community development project to date, funding $50 million over the next 30 years to support a multi-generational recreation center to be located in the City of Pflugerville Downtown East Project. Besides being home for the 120,000-square-foot recreation center, this 29-acre development project will include mixed-use and a new City Hall to enhance the overall quality of life for its residents.

"A strong partnership between the PCDC and the City of Pflugerville parks and recreation department creates a win-win scenario by driving tourism, attracting businesses, and fostering a flourishing community with a high quality of life," says Amy Madison, PCDC Executive Director. "The recent investment in recreation provides all ages in the community an opportunity for wellness and engagement for decades to come and shows the commitment PCDC has for serving the community today and in the future."

A Historic Partnership

Other projects developed by the PCDC and Parks and Recreation program have focused on a shared vision of community well-being. Together, the two organizations have worked to enhance the city's park system, ensuring that residents of all ages have access to quality recreational facilities. Parks and green spaces have been revitalized, athletic fields upgraded, and various recreational programs have been launched to cater to the community's diverse needs.

It starts with a plan in mind, so the PCDC recently funded a Comprehensive Parks and Recreation Plan in Pflugerville to guide the city's future parks and recreation initiatives. Implementing this plan helps guarantee the ongoing expansion and improvement of recreational options for residents of every age group. Moreover, it helps the parks department secure additional grants and support for further park system development.

"The PCDC's support in assisting the Parks Master plan was crucial as it not only provided the necessary funding but also opened doors for the parks department to secure additional grants and support," said Amy Madison, Executive Director of the PCDC. "It ensures the development, maintenance, and enhancement of vibrant and accessible spaces that promote physical well-being, community engagement, and environmental sustainability."

Parks Bring a Range of Benefits

Parks and recreation play a pivotal role in enhancing the quality of life in Pflugerville, Texas, offering numerous benefits to residents and visitors alike. These recreational spaces serve as magnets for increased tourism, drawing in visitors from far and wide to experience the city's natural beauty and recreational offerings. This influx of tourists boosts the local economy and supports businesses, fostering attraction and retention of enterprises within the community. Moreover, the presence of well-maintained parks and recreational facilities contributes to increased property values, as they are highly sought after by homebuyers who value the proximity to green spaces.

Kelsey Heiden, Assistant Director, City of Pflugerville Parks & Recreation, highlights the importance of the Pflugerville Community Development Corporation's Community Engagement Grant program, which has tremendously impacted the quality of life provided to the community through Parks and Recreation services.

"Parks and Recreation services are a vital part of our community," Heiden states. "They foster cultural, economic, emotional, environmental, physical, and social well-being. Living close to parks and other recreation facilities is consistently related to higher physical activity levels. Moreover, parks connect to nature, which studies demonstrate relieves stress, strengthens interpersonal relationships, and improves mental health."

In recent years, the partnership between the PCDC and the Pflugerville Parks and Recreation Department has resulted in numerous grants that have contributed significantly to improving and enhancing Pflugerville's parks. These grants are pivotal in creating a more enjoyable and accessible outdoor environment for residents. Some notable examples include "The Best Little Plaza in Texas," adding new trails at Springbrook Park, and significant improvements in downtown Pflugerville, such as sidewalk and parking enhancements to promote a pedestrian-friendly atmosphere and foster a vibrant downtown scene.

Besides funding the recreational center this year, the PCDC provided grants for two other park projects. The first involved a matching grant to obtain equipment from the National Fitness Campaign that encourages community involvement in fitness activities and promotes a healthier lifestyle among Pflugerville residents. The equipment purchased by the PCDC played a crucial role in making this initiative a reality.

The second project provided new shade equipment for two outdoor playgrounds at Black Locust Park and Pflugerville Heights Park in Pflugerville. By providing much-needed shade, these parks help protect the children and the equipment from sun exposure and provide a more enjoyable and comfortable experience during outdoor playtime for all ages.

The PCDC and the Parks and Recreation Department are dedicated to a partnership that improves the quality of life for Pflugerville residents and invests in safe, accessible, and enjoyable outdoor spaces. By supporting projects encouraging physical activity, enhancing public spaces, and addressing community needs, the PCDC also fosters a stronger sense of community that contributes to recruiting and retaining companies in the area.

The PCDC's assistance through various grants has facilitated the upgrades and improvements of Pflugerville's parks and recreation facilities. These grants have had a positive and lasting impact on the community, from revitalizing downtown areas to promoting fitness engagement and providing essential shade structures. The PCDC's ongoing partnership with the Parks and Recreation Department continues to shape Pflugerville into a city that values its residents' well-being and creates spaces that enhance the quality of life today and Pfar into the Pfuture.
